Hello and welcome to St Catherine’s Nursery Unit. We are situated adjacent to the main school building and provide friendly, caring, high quality nursery provision currently for 3 and 4 year old children.

The Nursery is open 5 days per week during term-time only, Monday—Friday, 9am-3:15pm. Click to view timetable.

We support the view that every child deserves the best possible start in life and support to fulfil their potential. We believe children learn by playing and exploring, being  active and through creative and critical thinking.

A child's experience in the early years has a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe and happy childhood is important in its own right. Good parenting and high quality early learning together provide the foundation for children to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up.

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum (EYFS) and plan a variety of activities both indoors and outdoors which aim to encourage children’s independence and imagination across the 7 areas of Learning and Development to support your child’s whole development.

If you would like more information about your child starting with us, please feel free to contact the school who will be help. We look forward to welcoming you. Come and see us and meet our team.

This term we are thinking about Out and About. We will be reading lots of stories about shapes around us, Rosie the hen, autumn, the weather and The Gruffalo. We are planning to go on several walks  around the main school field  and environmental areas. Parents can support our learning by talking to your children about their environment and looking for signs of autumn. Don’t forget to talk about the weather too. As you are out and about, talk to your child about the outside world e.g. the trees in your garden; find, look at, count and sort leaves, acorns, conkers etc. the possibilities are endless. Why don’t you collect some leaves to make a picture or add a little powder paint or food colouring to puddles and see what happens. If you’re looking for more ideas to try look on our Little Pockets of Ideas Board in the Nursery entrance hall and help yourself to any of the ideas sheets and recipes. Don’t forget you can borrow more great story books at the library. Look out for our latest play dough recipe and why not borrow one of our play and learn packs whilst you’re in the entrance hall too.

Try Learn and Play pack 11, Old MacDonald had a farm. Why not go for a walk and look for some ideas in pack 19, In the wild woods.

In maths we are focusing on using and naming simple shapes. Why not go on a shape hunt around your home and garden and look for stars, diamonds, circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, semi-circles and ovals. You might find circle plates in the kitchen; rectangle doors and square windows. Look at the shape of wheels and street signs as you walk around. Let us know about the shapes that you find. You could put some shapes into a feely box or bag and have a go at describing the shape that you are holding before naming it. Try using shapes to make a picture of a tree, house, cat, fish, slide, rocket or whatever you fancy. You could make shapes with play dough or lolly sticks. Children need lots of experience of using shapes and describing them as they learn their names.

Already busy at work!

We have already begun to explore shapes by hunting for them around the classroom, making pictures and printing with them.
